GCSE PE Skiing Video Evidence – Edexcel
For Pearson Edexcel GCSE Physical Education, skiing can be selected as an individual practical performance activity. Evidence for Edexcel GCSE PE skiing must be delivered in video format, clearly showing the student performing the required skiing skills and demonstrating performance in a full context.
The video evidence must show effective skiing technique, control, fluency and decision making across a range of conditions and terrain appropriate to the performer’s ability. Assessment may take place on outdoor snow or indoor real snow, but dry ski slopes are not permitted. Students assessed in skiing cannot also be assessed in snowboarding.
This page reproduces the official Edexcel GCSE PE skiing assessment criteria, including skills, performance requirements and level descriptors, to show exactly what must be captured and submitted as video evidence.
Assessment conditions
Students being assessed in skiing cannot also be assessed in snowboarding
Students can be assessed on outdoor snow or indoor real snow
Students cannot be assessed on dry ski slopes
Assessment must take place in conditions appropriate to the performer’s ability
Range of skills and techniques
The performance must demonstrate an effective range of:
Speed
Agility
Balance
Direction
Coordination
Stamina
Flexibility
Application of skills to benefit performance
The student should demonstrate:
Coordination
Dynamic balance
Timing
Rhythm
Control at speed
Effective management of the course
Influence on performance and motivation
The performance should show:
Focus and self control
Psychological control appropriate to the situation
Decision making relative to the difficulty of the slope
Application of tactics
The student should apply tactics across a variety of:
Terrain
Snow conditions, including icy or uneven surfaces
Slopes of increasing difficulty
Ability to adapt to the environment
The performance should show the ability to:
Respond to changing snow and terrain conditions
Adapt technique and line choice
Manage risk appropriately
Adherence to rules, health and safety
The student should demonstrate:
Awareness of health and safety guidelines
Appropriate risk management strategies
Consideration for the safety of themselves and others on the slope
Marks and levels
Total marks available: 25
Level descriptors
Level 1 – Ineffective (0–5 marks)
Skills and techniques are performed with inaccurate timing and inconsistent application. Limited and ineffective use of physical characteristics and attributes. Turns may be disconnected and steering may be achieved through whole body movement. Limited ability to influence performance and motivation. Little or no evidence of tactical adaptation to changing conditions or terrain.
Typical slope level: Green routes
Level 2 – Basic (6–10 marks)
Skills and techniques are performed with inconsistent timing and application. Basic use of physical characteristics and attributes. The range of techniques available is restricted. Basic influence on performance and motivation. Limited tactical adaptation to changing conditions or competitive situations, with little success.
Typical slope level: Blue routes
Level 3 – Competent (11–15 marks)
Competent skills and techniques with some accurate timing and consistency, though errors are present. Turns are rhythmic with one turn flowing into the next. Appropriate but sometimes ineffective use of physical attributes. Some ability to influence performance and motivation. Attempts to adapt to changing conditions with some success.
Typical slope level: Red routes
Level 4 – Good (16–20 marks)
Good range of skills and techniques with accurate timing and consistency, even under pressure. Effective use of physical characteristics, though some misjudgements may occur. Appropriate psychological control and motivation. Tactical changes are effective and consistent.
Typical slope level: Red and black routes
Level 5 – Very good (21–25 marks)
Very good range of skills and techniques with accurate timing and consistent application, with few errors even in complex scenarios such as moguls, deep snow, narrow corridors or varied terrain. Highly effective use of physical characteristics. Strong psychological control, focus and motivation. Consistent success when adapting to increasingly complex situations and changing conditions.
Typical slope level: Red and black routes
