Ski Touring and Snowshoeing

Snow Q’s: How to get into ski touring

We recently sat down with Paul and Tom from Alps Adventures for a chat about getting away from it all this winter!

This January, we are going to be running several special days for those people who want to get into Randonnée skiing or Snowshoeing. We are also running a special advanced Randonnée class for those who want to expand their skills in this area. Depending on the take up of these initial days we will consider expanding this facility further.

In these current times, we are seeing a lot of demand from people who want to get away into the backcountry and there is no better way to do this than by learning from the experts.

All the following days are guided by Tom and Paul who are qualified guides and will teach you how to do it whilst keeping you safe at the same time.

9 January 2021 - Introduction to ski touring day - full day

125frs per person, avalanche safety equipment provided.

16 January 2021 - Introduction to snowshoeing - full day

125frs per person, snowshoes, walking poles and avalanche safety equipment provided.

30 January 2021 - Intermediate ski touring day

This day is for those who have either already attended the introduction or have had some previous experience. It will follow a similar programme but extend the tour into a more interesting location or even scale a peak.

125frs per person, avalanche safety equipment provided.

During any of these days, your qualified guides (Paul and Tom) will ensure you are happy with using the various bits of equipment that are additional to skiing on piste. You will then undertake a journey and gain tuition on the different areas to be aware of when ski-mountaineering. This involves the skills of ascent, descent, use of avalanche equipment and basic avalanche avoidance.

The day breaks down as follows;

0930 - Your instructor meets you at a café in the designated location. They will check your equipment and issue you with the extra that is included. They will also give you a brief introduction to its use. The guide will also talk you through the route and options for the day. Some flexibility will be required descending on the weather, snow conditions and group ability.

1030 - Start from the trailhead or even use some ski uplift to get higher if that is the best option for the day.

1230 - Stop for a packed lunch, or at a mountain refuge/ restaurant.

1330 - Continue the route along with discussion of avalanche risk and descent skills. Undertake a simulated avalanche rescue scenario. Start descent back to the start point.

1530 - Debriefing and end of the course.

Why Us?

Experience - we have run many of these courses in the past decade.

Safety - we know the locations and the weather and always look after you and show you how to look after yourself.

Fun - Meeting new people, having food and laughter and experiences together. You leave this trip with skills, memories and new friends.
